Can You Trust the Yuka App for Skincare?

When it comes to looking after your skin, many of us like to feel informed. Whether that’s reading ingredient lists, scanning products with apps like Yuka, or asking for expert advice -there’s no shortage of places people turn to for information.

As someone who began her skincare journey reading the likes of Paula Begoun’s The Beauty Bible and Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me in my early twenties, I completely understand the urge to know more. That early curiosity really shaped how I work and how I guide my clients today at Belmont Medical Skin Clinic.

It was around that time I also started to question the bold claims made by some of the big cosmetic industry giants. I even began looking into the Advertising Standards Authority (A.S.A) and the regulations around misleading marketing—a rabbit hole that sparked a whole new level of awareness. But that’s me going off on a tangent… and probably the start of another blog altogether!

These days, I often hear from clients who scan their products with the Yuka app. If you’re one of them, you’re not alone - it’s a popular tool. But how much can we rely on it?

Let’s take a look at what Yuka does well, where it falls short, and why it’s just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to choosing the right skincare.

🧴 What Is the Yuka App?

If you haven’t come across Yuka yet, it’s a free mobile app designed to rate products by scanning their barcodes. It’s often used for food and cosmetics, including skincare.

Here’s what it does:

  • Gives each product a score out of 100—based on ingredient safety, not effectiveness
  • Flags potentially harmful or irritating substances
  • Uses a traffic light system (green = excellent, orange = moderate, red = poor)
  • Helps users make more informed decisions about what they’re using

It’s certainly gained popularity with ingredient-aware consumers, and I totally get why.

What Yuka Does Well

I do think Yuka can be really helpful—especially for those who want to better understand what’s inside their skincare products.

It’s great for:

  • Highlighting ingredients that may be linked to allergies, irritation, or hormone disruption
  • Offering a simplified overview of a product’s composition
  • Supporting people with sensitive skin or specific ingredient concerns
  • Encouraging a more mindful approach to what we put on our skin (which I’m all for!)

But It’s Not the Full Picture

That said, like any app, it has its limitations—and it’s important to know what those are.

Here’s what Yuka doesn’t do:

  • It doesn’t assess how effective a product is, or whether it actually delivers visible results
  • It doesn’t consider how ingredients work together within a well-balanced, professional formula
  • It can sometimes recommend “healthier” alternatives that aren’t suitable for your skin type—or even remotely similar in purpose
  • It doesn’t take into account:
    • Ingredient concentrations
    • Frequency of use
    • How long the product stays on your skin
    • Texture, wearability, or user experience (which really matters!)
  • Scores may be outdated if the product has been reformulated or repackaged

So while it’s useful for ingredient awareness, it doesn’t reflect the real-life experience of using a product—something we place huge value on in-clinic.

Because for most of us, skincare is more than just science. It’s also about the experience: the scent, the texture, the packaging, and how your skin feels afterwards. Those sensory details help us enjoy our routine—and stick with it.

💡 Yuka Is a Tool - Not the Final Word

In short, Yuka can be a helpful guide—but it isn’t the final verdict.

  • A product with an “excellent” score may not suit your skin type at all
  • A “red” ingredient might be completely harmless in the small amount used
  • It doesn’t replace personalised, professional advice or tailored skincare planning

If you're ever unsure, you’re always better asking someone trained to work with real skin—not just with ingredient names.

🌿 Why We Chose Sensilis—and Why Yuka Loves It Too

At Belmont Medical Skin Clinic, one of the reasons we chose to work with Sensilis is its commitment to clinical integrity, visible results, and formulations suitable for sensitive skin.

It also happens to perform exceptionally well on the Yuka app—many of the products scoring green (‘Excellent’) across the board.

Here are just some of the Sensilis products rated “Excellent” on Yuka:

Cleansers & Toners

  • Calm in Balm
  • Micellar Water
  • Gentle Cleansing Mousse (100/100!)
  • Purify Essential Cleanser
  • The Cool Rescue Hydrating Tonic
  • Purifying Balancing Toner

Peels & Exfoliants

  • Resurfacing Black Peel
  • Azelaic Peel
  • Skin D-Pigment AHA10 Overnight

  • Skin Rescue S.O.S Serum
  • Eternalist A.G.E. AI Serum

  • Skin Rescue Barrier Cream
  • Eternalist A.G.E. Retinol
  • Upgrade AR

Eye Care

  • Skin Glow K Eyes
  • Eternalist A.G.E. Eyes

And it’s not just the ratings—these products are:

  • Genuinely effective
  • A real treat to use
  • Designed for sensitive or sensitised skin

There are also a few different lines within the Sensilis range to suit a wide variety of skin types and concerns—so there really is something for everyone.

I’ve spent the past few months testing them out myself (I know—hard job, but someone’s got to do it!), and I can genuinely say they’re brilliant.

🧠 Advice for Clients Who Use Yuka

If you’re someone who likes to scan before you buy—go for it. It shows you’re taking your skin health seriously.

Here’s what I’d always recommend:

  • Use Yuka as a guide—but pair it with professional insight
  • Don’t panic over a red rating—context matters
  • Choose what suits your skin right now, not just what scores well
  • Think about texture, results, and feel—not just ingredients
  • And if you’re ever unsure—ask your skin expert (that’s what I’m here for)

Everyone’s Skincare Journey Is Personal

💬 Let’s Keep the Conversation Going
