The HydraFacial left my skin intensely hydrated, plump, and visibly brighter. I couldn’t believe the transformation!

When it comes to looking after your skin, many of us like to feel informed. Whether that’s reading ingredient lists, scanning products with apps like Yuka, or asking for expert advice -there’s no shortage of places people turn to for information.
As someone who began her skincare journey reading the likes of Paula Begoun’s The Beauty Bible and Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me in my early twenties, I completely understand the urge to know more. That early curiosity really shaped how I work and how I guide my clients today at Belmont Medical Skin Clinic.
It was around that time I also started to question the bold claims made by some of the big cosmetic industry giants. I even began looking into the Advertising Standards Authority (A.S.A) and the regulations around misleading marketing—a rabbit hole that sparked a whole new level of awareness. But that’s me going off on a tangent… and probably the start of another blog altogether!
These days, I often hear from clients who scan their products with the Yuka app. If you’re one of them, you’re not alone - it’s a popular tool. But how much can we rely on it?
Let’s take a look at what Yuka does well, where it falls short, and why it’s just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to choosing the right skincare.
If you haven’t come across Yuka yet, it’s a free mobile app designed to rate products by scanning their barcodes. It’s often used for food and cosmetics, including skincare.
Here’s what it does:
It’s certainly gained popularity with ingredient-aware consumers, and I totally get why.
I do think Yuka can be really helpful—especially for those who want to better understand what’s inside their skincare products.
It’s great for:
That said, like any app, it has its limitations—and it’s important to know what those are.
Here’s what Yuka doesn’t do:
So while it’s useful for ingredient awareness, it doesn’t reflect the real-life experience of using a product—something we place huge value on in-clinic.
Because for most of us, skincare is more than just science. It’s also about the experience: the scent, the texture, the packaging, and how your skin feels afterwards. Those sensory details help us enjoy our routine—and stick with it.
In short, Yuka can be a helpful guide—but it isn’t the final verdict.
If you're ever unsure, you’re always better asking someone trained to work with real skin—not just with ingredient names.
At Belmont Medical Skin Clinic, one of the reasons we chose to work with Sensilis is its commitment to clinical integrity, visible results, and formulations suitable for sensitive skin.
It also happens to perform exceptionally well on the Yuka app—many of the products scoring green (‘Excellent’) across the board.
Here are just some of the Sensilis products rated “Excellent” on Yuka:
Cleansers & Toners
Peels & Exfoliants
Serums & Treatments
Moisturisers
Eye Care
Makeup
And it’s not just the ratings—these products are:
There are also a few different lines within the Sensilis range to suit a wide variety of skin types and concerns—so there really is something for everyone.
I’ve spent the past few months testing them out myself (I know—hard job, but someone’s got to do it!), and I can genuinely say they’re brilliant.
If you’re someone who likes to scan before you buy—go for it. It shows you’re taking your skin health seriously.
Here’s what I’d always recommend:
At Belmont Medical Skin Clinic, we’re passionate about education and informed choices—but we also respect that everyone’s approach is different.
Whether you’re scanning ingredients, researching actives, or simply trusting how your skin feels—it’s all valid.
We’re here to offer clarity, context, and confidence—but ultimately, the decision is always yours.
I’d love to hear from you:
Pop in for a chat, send a message, or leave a comment—I genuinely love hearing what people are reading, trying, and learning when it comes to their skin.
Because at the end of the day, great skincare starts with curiosity, trust, and expert guidance.
