At Belmont Medical Skin Clinic, we often receive questions about various skin treatments, with patients seeking professional advice on their efficacy and whether they’re worth the investment. While we currently don’t offer Broadband Light (BBL) or HERO Treatments at our clinic, these light-based therapies are creating quite a buzz in the industry, and we want to share what we know. As a qualified Laser and Skin Therapist with years of experience, I'm always keen to stay informed on the latest advancements, and this topic has been a popular conversation I’ve been having with some of my clients recently and so I thought I’d share this on our site too!

What are BBL & HERO Treatments?

BBL or HERO Treatment

BBL (Broadband Light) therapy is an advanced form of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). It uses high-intensity light energy to treat a variety of skin conditions, stimulating collagen production and targeting issues such as pigmentation, redness, and acne. HERO (High Energy Rapid Output) is the newest upgrade to the BBL system, designed to provide faster, more efficient treatments with a greater ability to cover larger areas.

Why Should You Listen to Me?

As a qualified Laser and Skin Therapist, I’ve undergone extensive training and hold various qualifications in the field, including experience in managing laser and IPL treatments at a registered establishment under the RQIA in Northern Ireland. I have many years of experience and hands-on expertise in treating a variety of skin concerns with IPL and laser technologies.

I’ve trained in:

  • IPL for Hair Removal, Red Vein, Pigmentation/Sun Spots, and Skin Rejuvenation
  • Laser for Hair Removal, Tattoo Removal, Blue/Purple Vein Reduction, Skin Resurfacing, Verruca/Wart Treatment, and Fungal Nail Infections

This background gives me a well-rounded understanding of light-based therapies, helping me offer impartial advice on the latest treatments, including BBL and HERO.

BBL vs. Traditional Laser & IPL Treatments: What's the Difference?

Having worked with both laser and IPL technologies for nearly two decades, I've seen how light-based therapies have evolved. Here’s a breakdown of how BBL and HERO stack up against traditional laser and IPL:

TechnologyHow It WorksBest ForProsCons
LaserFocused wavelength of light targeting specific concernsDeep pigmentation, vascular lesions, hair removal, acne scarsPrecise and effective for targeted concernsCan be painful, longer recovery, more expensive
IPLMultiple light wavelengths treating multiple skin concerns at onceSun damage, rosacea, pigmentation, skin rejuvenationCovers large areas, less downtimeLess precise, may require more sessions
BBLAdvanced form of IPL, delivering controlled light pulses at multiple depthsAgeing skin, pigmentation, redness, collagen stimulationMore powerful, precise, stimulates collagen, improves skin textureNot as targeted for deep pigmentation
HEROFaster, more efficient version of BBLLarger areas, anti-ageing, rejuvenationFaster, more comfortable, efficient for larger areasLess suitable for smaller, targeted areas

What Are the Limitations of BBL & HERO Treatments?

While BBL and HERO are incredibly effective, they do have limitations. These treatments may not be the best option for:

  • Deep pigmentation or scars, which may require more targeted treatments like laser.
  • Small, specific areas, such as individual veins or deeply embedded pigmentation.
  • Darker skin tones, which can increase the risk of hyperpigmentation.

How Does BBL Work?

BBL uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate different skin layers. This light energy is absorbed by targeted areas (e.g., pigmentation or blood vessels), breaking them down naturally over time.

Wavelengths Used in BBL & HERO Treatments:

  • 515-560 nm – Targets superficial pigmentation (e.g., sunspots)
  • 560-590 nm – Treats redness and rosacea
  • 590-640 nm – Addresses deeper pigmentation and vascular lesions
  • 640-850 nm – Stimulates collagen and reduces fine lines

Unlike harmful UV rays from the sun, BBL uses controlled light wavelengths that are safe for the skin, minimising risks of DNA damage or skin cancer. The treatment is designed to target specific skin concerns without affecting the surrounding tissue.

Who is a Good Candidate for BBL or HERO Treatment?

BBL and HERO treatments are great options for people looking to improve their skin’s overall tone and texture, particularly for those with:

  • Sun damage or age spots
  • Rosacea or facial redness
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Signs of ageing, such as fine lines and collagen loss

However, BBL and HERO are not suitable for everyone. You may not be a good candidate if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a history of skin cancer
  • Are on photosensitising medications (e.g., isotretinoin)
  • Have active skin infections or open wounds
  • Have recently been exposed to the sun, tanning beds, or fake tan

Does BBL or HERO Treatment Hurt?

The sensation during treatment is often described as a mild snap or warm flick, similar to the feeling of a rubber band on the skin. Modern cooling technology helps keep discomfort to a minimum. Most clients tolerate the treatment well, and numbing cream is rarely necessary.

Pre-Treatment & Post-Treatment Advice

To ensure the best results, follow these guidelines before and after your BBL or HERO treatment:

Before Treatment:

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 4 weeks
  • Stop using strong exfoliants and retinoids a few days before
  • Discontinue blood-thinning medications if advised by your doctor

After Treatment:

  • Wear SPF 50+ daily
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks
  • Skip harsh skincare products (e.g., retinoids, AHAs, BHAs) for 1 week
  • Refrain from hot baths, saunas, or intense exercise for 24-48 hours

Jargon Buster: Understanding the Terms

We know that navigating skin treatments can sometimes feel like learning a new language! To help, we’ve put together a glossary of key terms used in this article:

  • AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid): A type of chemical exfoliant derived from fruits and milk. It helps remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, improving skin texture, brightness, and moisture levels.
  • Acne Scarring: Marks or indentations left on the skin after acne has healed. These scars can be improved with light-based therapies like BBL and HERO.
  • BBL (Broadband Light): A non-invasive treatment that uses multiple wavelengths of light to target skin concerns like pigmentation, redness, and signs of ageing. It’s a more advanced form of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light).
  • BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid): A type of chemical exfoliant, also known as salicylic acid, that works deeper in the pores to clear out dirt, oil, and debris. It’s particularly beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin.
  • Blood-Thinning Medications: Medications that reduce the blood’s ability to clot, such as aspirin or warfarin. These should be stopped before treatments like BBL or HERO to reduce the risk of bruising or bleeding.
  • Collagen: A protein in the skin that provides structure, elasticity, and firmness. Collagen production decreases with age, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. BBL and HERO treatments stimulate collagen production to improve skin texture and firmness.
  • Exfoliants: Products that remove dead skin cells to improve the skin’s texture. Strong exfoliants should be avoided before and after light treatments to prevent irritation. Common types of exfoliants include AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acids), which are chemical exfoliants. AHA works on the surface of the skin to remove dead skin, making it great for dry or sun-damaged skin. BHA penetrates deeper into the pores, making it ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin.
  • HERO: Stands for High Energy Rapid Output. This is the latest technology upgrade to BBL, which is faster and more efficient, particularly for treating larger areas.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Darkened areas of skin caused by excess melanin production, often due to sun exposure or acne. BBL treatments can help to reduce these spots by targeting the pigment.
  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): A treatment that uses high-intensity light to target various skin issues, such as pigmentation, rosacea, and acne. It’s similar to BBL but less advanced.
  • Laser: A concentrated beam of light that targets specific skin concerns such as deep pigmentation, vascular lesions, and hair removal. Unlike IPL or BBL, lasers can be more precise.
  • Pigmentation: Discoloration of the skin, which can be caused by sun exposure, ageing, or acne. It includes conditions like sunspots, age spots, and freckles.
  • Photosensitising Medications: Drugs that increase the skin’s sensitivity to light, making it more likely to burn. These medications should be discontinued before light-based treatments like BBL or HERO.
  • Rosacea: A skin condition that causes redness, flushing, and sometimes visible blood vessels, usually on the face. BBL can help reduce these symptoms.
  • SPF (Sun Protection Factor): A measure of how well a sunscreen will protect your skin from harmful UV rays. For best results after treatments like BBL, it’s essential to use SPF 50+.
  • Wavelength: The length of the light waves used in treatments like BBL or laser. Different wavelengths target different layers of the skin and skin concerns.

Final Thoughts on BBL & HERO Treatments

Both BBL and HERO treatments offer innovative solutions for rejuvenating your skin, addressing concerns like pigmentation, fine lines, and acne. With almost 20 years of experience in laser and IPL treatments, I’m excited to see how these technologies evolve. They provide faster, more comfortable results and are excellent for overall skin rejuvenation.

It’s important to do your research before committing to any treatment. Don’t hesitate to ask plenty of questions and ensure you’re confident in your choice of treatment and provider. There’s a wide variety of service providers on the market, and it’s essential to find one that feels like the right fit for your needs.
